2004 Program

THE NEW ZEALAND ’READING SAFARI'® CONFERENCE’

Following the success of our previous seven programs, INTERead New Zealand is pleased to offer the 2004 New Zealand ¹Reading Safari¹ Conference programs. These programs give you the opportunity to experience first-hand the world-renowned teaching programs offered in New Zealand schools.

THE PROGRAMS

There are three programs available in 2004:

Programs B2, B3 & B4: Two-, three- and four-week programs which, including travel to and from LA, run from 14 July to 31 July, 7 August, 14 August respectively.

Participants for each program depart as a group from Los Angeles airport.
Each program begins with a three-day orientation which includes meetings with key educationalists. Many of our participants sight-see before returning to the US, and we can arrange a later return flight for you. An additional cost may be incurred. The cost of your sightseeing trip is also NOT included in the program cost. Note that all New Zealand schools close for vacation on Friday 2 July and re-open on Monday 19 July 2002.

All arrangements are made in good faith and INTERead NZ Ltd reserves the right to make last minute alterations to the program to accommodate legitimate unforeseen circumstances.

APPLICATION AND DEPOSIT

Applications are made by completing the official application form (photocopies are acceptable) and posting it and a deposit of US$500 to INTERead NZ Ltd, PO Box 12-118, Wellington, New Zealand. This deposit is applied to the overall cost of the program. 50% of the deposit is non-refundable. None of the deposit is refundable if the participant withdraws after the interview. Receipt of an application and deposit will not necessarily ensure selection. Places will be allocated on a ’first come, first served’ basis. The final selection will be made following an interview. All unsuccessful applicants will have their deposits refunded in full, but without interest. Please ensure you indicate your program choice.

Application deadline

Applications and deposits must be received no later than 14 March 2002. Interviews will be held during April/May 2002, immediately after which your selection will be confirmed. Full payment for participation must be made immediately on confirmation. Payments received after 28 May 2002 may result in cancellation and loss of the deposit. We strongly advise you to insure against loss of program fee due to last minute unforeseen circumstances that may prevent you from coming.

How to pay

Payment of deposit and full cost must be made by an International Bank check made out to INTERead New Zealand Ltd (being the company that has arranged this program) or by electronic fund transfer. The cost of these transactions will be the responsibility of the participant.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE

Most people who attend this program, need some financial; assistance. The following are some ideas based on previous participants and discussions with several District Superintendents and community organisations:

Yourself

You are investing in your future – the extra professional development credits could mean an increase in salary.

School funds

Does your school have Teacher Development Funds or Reading Funds available. Perhaps a special fund-raising project could be organised. Offering to pass on your knowledge and experiences to others on your return, could help to justify the use of school funds.

School District funding

Does your school district have a Special Education fund or Teacher development fund? You are more likely to get district assistance if the program relates to a specific district initiative in literacy. You may need to get others to help you prepare a grant application.

Community funding

Enlist help to raise funds

Most teachers find it difficult to find the time to prepare for teaching let alone raise funds for such a trip. Many people and organisations are willing to help when they understand the benefits of this program, not only to you personally, but to the school and ultimately to them. Try asking a family member who has the time, a group of parents, a service club, the Chamber of Commerce to help you with the leg work.

Finally, don’t just try one avenue – many participants have received funding from several sources. Begin now and spread your net as widely as possible. Good luck!
