New Zealand is a small country with largely a
unified literacy-based approach to the teaching of reading. Since the publication of a
Newsweek article on international literacy rates (2 Dec 1991), there has been global
interest in the New Zealand junior classroom. Many countries are interested in recreating
in their schools a similar climate of common practice that occurs in the New Zealand
junior classroom. While there are many opportunities to learn about the philosophy that
underpins the literacy based approach to the teaching of reading, this program gives you
an opportunity to experience at first hand that common teaching practice in a top quality
New Zealand classroom assisted by a top quality New Zealand teacher of reading.
For several weeks you will observe and participate in the
program at work in its natural environment. By spending most of your time based at one
school, with one teacher, you will build a professional relationship that allows you to go
beyond a superficial overview and see the program and the New Zealand education system as
they really are. Regular interaction with other program participants will give you
comparisons with other schools. You will then return to your school with a realistic
vision of what can be achieved. You also have the choice to live with a New Zealand host
family to gain an understanding of who we are as a people, and how this influences our
attitudes to reading. Successful completion of the program gains you credits towards your
Graduate Continuing Studies.
